Definition of work ethic:
Work ethic is a set of values pivoted on diligence.
Overview of diligence:
Steadfast effort and perseverance.
Biblical foundation:
The scriptures provide numerous teachings on work and diligence, highlighting their significance in a believer's life.
1. Biblical foundations of work ethic
Creation mandate
Genesis 1:26 - 28: God created humanity in His image and commanded them to fill the earth and subdue it. The concept of stewardship over creation implies responsibility and hard work. The responsibility for the upkeep of the Garden of Eden was given the man (Adam). So as a man you should not look any further, find from the bible your responsibilities and abilities.
Work is a divine calling
Colossians 3:23-24: "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men." This scripture emphasizes that labour is not just for earthly gain but is a service to God. Service is ministry (diakonia), so the standard of God is very high, God expects excellent service to Him and to mankind. This concept follows the two great commandments, as found in Matthew 22:36-40, are to love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and love thy neighbour as thyself. If you love God you will serve Him with quality service, likewise with man you are called to serve exceptionally well. The standard of the Lord standeth sure.
2. The example of diligence in scripture
Proverbs 10:4: "A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich." The contrast between diligence and laziness; diligence is linked with prosperity, laziness is linked with poverty.
The Ant as a model of diligence
Proverbs 6:6-8: Encourages learning from the ant, which prepares its food in summer and gathers its sustenance. Highlights the importance of foresight and hard work. Planning for future can never be over emphasized. A real man is a visionary so he must lead a family based on what he sees in the future.
3. Jesus and the value of labour
Jesus was a carpenter before His ministry (Mark 6:3), modelling a strong work ethic in His early life. Be found doing something that will earn you money, this could be a Job or business. Teachings on labour Matthew 25:14-30 (Parable of the talents): The emphasis on using God-given gifts and abilities for fruitful labour. The importance of being responsible and productive stewards of one's resources.
4. Diligence in the New Testament
The Apostolic teachings
2 Thessalonians 3:10: "For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat." Reinforces the necessity of work and personal responsibility. This teaching can be adopted for raising children, children must know the importance of participating in house chores and understand that food is a product of labour. Bread doesn't just grow in the bread bin but there are fields that are cultivated to sow barley or wheat before they enjoy bread. Diligence in Spiritual matters. Hebrews 6:11-12: Encouragement to show the same diligence in faith and good works. The need for perseverance in both earthly and spiritual endeavours.
5. Practical applications of diligence in daily life
Workplace ethics:
Being reliable, honest, and striving for excellence as a manifestation of faith. Balancing work and rest:
Emphasizing the need for rest (Exodus 20:8-11) while maintaining diligence in work. The body is the vehicle that carries your spirit and soul, it gets tired, you need to have enough rest and unwind. Reflect on your work done and critically evaluate if you are still in line with your values. Exodus 20:8-11 Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labour and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
6. The Impact of work ethic on society
Modelling Christ-like behaviour
Christian work ethic can influence co-workers and create a positive work environment.
Community contribution
Colossians 3:17: "And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus." Encourages contributions to society that reflect God's character.
